Charles Manson (1934–2017) was an American criminal and cult leader who orchestrated a series of notorious murders in the late 1960s. He led the “Manson Family,” a commune whose members committed nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969, including the brutal killing of pregnant actress Sharon Tate.

Manson’s followers were primarily young women whom he manipulated through a combination of charisma, psychological control, and the use of hallucinogenic drugs. He believed in an impending apocalyptic race war, which he referred to as “Helter Skelter,” a term he borrowed from a Beatles song. Manson interpreted the song as a call to incite this conflict, using it to justify the murders committed by his followers.

In 1971, Manson was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of seven people. Although he did not personally carry out the killings, his influence over his followers was deemed sufficient for conviction. Initially sentenced to death, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment when California abolished the death penalty. Manson died in prison in 2017 at the age of 83.
